Essentials for Success in the U.S.
In this course, students will explore topics essential for successfully transitioning to university life in the United States including academic expectations, university communications, and living arrangements. Students will come away with a better understanding of course registration, university housing, meal plans, health and transportation options and take action on decisions impacting their future university experience.
Essentials for Immigration and Legal Matters
In this course, students will receive an overview of the requirements and expectations for studying on an F-1 student visa in the United States. Students will also learn about common legal situations they may encounter as it relates to employment and entering into contracts.
1-on-1 Advising
This course is designed to introduce students to characteristics necessary for university success through examination of their intended major. Students will reflect on their strengths and goals, and explore future careers that fit their preferences and interests.

This course is designed to help students understand expectations surrounding writing for an American university audience and how those expectations differ from writing conventions in their home countries. Students will review and practice major types of writing required in university courses including essays, email, in-class examinations, and discussion posts.

This course is designed to help students practice key functional language used both at university and in daily life in order to facilitate conversation, receive assistance, and clarify understanding. Students will engage in discussions and activities to practice this language so that they can feel comfortable meeting their communication needs upon arrival to campus. Cultural notes will be provided so that participants will have a better understanding of expected behavior in a variety of situations.

This course is designed to strengthen students’ oral presentation skills by reviewing and practicing major presentation types used at universities. Students will learn how to employ effective strategies in order to execute short presentations that are well-organized and engaging.

To ensure a positive learning experience for all, late registration will be accommodated up to the second day of class. However no refund will be given for any contact hours missed.
