Role of Students

Did you know

Did you know that many Chinese students believe that their performance in a given class is a reflection on their teacher’s ability to teach?

When these students perform less than desired, they tend to attribute blame to the shortcomings of their teacher.

How can you help?

Remind students that they are responsible for their own learning and that they will get out of the class what they put into it.

Be clear and upfront about your expectations for all students. Explain which, if any, readings or assignments are optional and why you have designated them this way.

Remember that not all students feel comfortable with lack of structure. Consider beginning your classes in a structured way and then opening them up gradually to less structured discussions and assignments.

A student’s perspective

“It is very difficult for Chinese students to let go of their belief that teachers are responsible for students’ learning. During my first semester at a U.S. university, some teachers assigned required readings and others only gave suggested readings. My Chinese friends and I thought that the teachers who gave required reading assignments were more responsible teachers. In the classes with suggested readings, my friends who failed blamed the teacher. This example shows that Chinese students can still be dependent on teachers to guide their reading and studying. In America, it is the student’s responsibility to be a successful learner.”
