Seeking Help

Did you know

Did you know that Chinese students expect their teachers to guide them with respect to everything related to their schooling?

This is because Chinese teachers take an active and comprehensive approach to their students’ success and personal well-being both inside and outside of the classroom.

How can you help?

Make it clear at various points of the semester that you expect students to make arrangements with you if they need assistance or want to talk about the subject matter.

Remind students that questions are welcomed and that you expect them to have questions about the course material.

A Student’s perspective

“One of my professors was very supportive the first month I was in the U.S. She asked me to meet her and she asked me questions about what I understood and how I was doing. She helped me. Then after a few weeks, she asked me less frequently to make an appointment with her. I thought she was just too busy to meet, but I was confused and had questions about many things. Then I understood what was happening – she was waiting for me to come to her and I was waiting for her to contact me. So something went wrong between us. Later we had a conversation trying to sort it out. I realized that I should not feel pressured and actually it would really help to meet up with her. So I adapted and adjusted and things have improved a lot.
