What Happens When You Assume

When it comes to international education in the U.S., California, New York, and, more recently, Texas often get the spotlight, as many assume these states hold all the opportunity.

However, this perception can be misleading. North Carolina offers a compelling alternative, combining work-life balance with meaningful opportunities, giving students a state of equal value to consider. By understanding the facts about each option, students can make more informed decisions about one of the most important choices of their lives.

What’s Great About North Carolina?

Many people underestimate the career opportunities North Carolina offers (see Job Market below). It also combines a balanced pace of life with accessible communities and a welcoming culture, making it both comfortable and easy to navigate for students and young professionals. Its mix of growing cities, manageable density, and flexible lifestyle creates an environment where people can thrive without feeling overwhelmed.

In Comparison To Other States

Choosing where to study in the U.S. isn’t just about rankings—it’s about the lifestyle you’re stepping into. When comparing these states (CA, NY, NC, and TX) to each other, we’ve considered the following categories:

  1. Cost of Living
  2. Pace of Life and Space
  3. Culture and Opportunity
  4. Lifestyle Rhythm

Cost of Living

The light blue color indicates range of costs, depending on the city you live in. These numbers are calculated on the cities of that house the top universities that students apply to.

Cost of living includes housing, food, personal expenses and transportation. This does not include tuition prices though they would be expected to scale with the other factors.

Pace of Living & Space

This section highlights how people might experience space and their speed of life living in these states.

➡️NC = balance, breathing room, and livable pace

➡️ NY/CA = fast and crowded

➡️ TX = big but spread out

This is further exemplified by the amount of square footage of space you can buy for $1,300 a month in each of these states.

  • NY: 300 sq ft
  • CA: 500 sq ft
  • TX: 750 sq ft
  • NC: 750 sq ft

Culture & Opportunity

Each of these states offers distinct cultures and career landscapes. In larger, more established markets, long-standing industries are often saturated—meaning that while major companies are present, competition for entry is significantly higher. By contrast, “emerging” markets are those that have seen meaningful growth and new opportunity over the past 20 years.

These differences also shape the day-to-day student experience—especially when it comes to community and belonging.

In more established states like California and New York, students often find large, international communities with deep-rooted cultural networks. While expansive, these environments can also feel more fragmented and competitive to navigate.

In North Carolina, international communities are smaller but rapidly growing. This often translates to more personalized support, tighter-knit networks, and a smoother transition into campus life.

Lifestyle Rhythm

California offers high levels of opportunity, particularly in leading industries, but this comes with a higher cost of living and a more competitive, high-pressure environment.

Texas provides strong opportunities at scale, with a rapidly growing economy, though its fast expansion can still create a sense of high pace and adjustment.

🏗️ + 🌆 + 🤝 + 📊 → 📈

New York is fast-paced and highly dense, with a strong career-driven culture that prioritizes ambition, networking, and constant movement.

⚡ + 🏙️ + 📈 + ⏱️ → 🎯

North Carolina offers a more balanced pace of life, with lower pressure and greater flexibility, allowing students to pursue opportunities while maintaining a comfortable and manageable lifestyle.

🌿 + 💸 + ⏳ + 📍 → ⚖️

The Choice Is Yours

While North Carolina emerges as a compelling and often overlooked choice—blending opportunity, livability, and balance—each state offers distinct advantages shaped by its culture and economy. The best decision ultimately depends on where a student feels they can thrive, grow, and take full advantage of the opportunities around them.
