Stronger Together

Universities who put a priority on global education create the best of all possible worlds for their students–enriching, dynamic experiences for international students–and eye-opening collaborations that broaden cultural views for domestic students. The world around us is only getting more and more diverse, and programs that promote international learning and support global student populations are preparing those students to be more worldly, capable, and confident in their studies and their future lives.>

At New Mind, our strong collaborations are the source of our strength. This year, our partnership with TOEFL Cô Giang Language Training Center in Vietnam helped students prepare their extensive applications. All students were admitted into every applied school and received multiple scholarships. The Global Academy at UNCG also developed several notable initiatives with New Mind that foster strong collaboration:

  • Six of China’s leading music schools have partnered with us to facilitate faculty/academic exchange, non-degree and degree programs
  • UNCG Global Visiting Student Program (GVSP) in conjunction with the College of Visual and Performing Arts
  • Our Global Academy Graduate Pathway Program officially launched in January 2019.
  • Learning from the World
As partners in education, we strongly support curriculum research and use it to help develop new programming ideas for New Mind. This year, our faculty attended several conferences that focused on the exchange of ideas, culture and professional skills between nations. In addition, two of our staff members, Susan Chuang and Megan Gunderson, even shared their advising experiences with NACADA’s attendees in a panel called “Individual or Cultural: How Intercultural Competency and the Student Journey Contribute to International Student Advising.” Our research events this year include:
  • AIEA Conference 2019
  • Global Ties 2019 Meeting
  • NACADA 2018
  • Meet and Greet in China
In the United States, many students connect with college admissions representative before they ever apply to a university. But in China, Meet and Greet sessions are more common, where students learn more about the university by meeting college representatives after their acceptance. In April 2019, international representatives from NC State University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina and New Mind staff visited six Chinese cities to share the values and strengths of this incredible university and city so students may find their ultimate academic fit. These sessions are a valuable and important way to help Chinese students decide if a particular university is the right fit for their needs.
